Emirates Cancellation Policy: Refunds, Fees and Your Rights

Emirates sells a wide range of fares, and what you get back when you cancel depends almost entirely on which one you bought. The airline's own rules are clear about that, but there are also legal protections that sit on top of them: a 24-hour cancellation window on trips to or from the United States, US refund rules when Emirates cancels or significantly changes a flight, and European and UK rules on departures from those regions. This guide walks through each situation and shows you where to make a request through Emirates itself.

Start with your fare conditions

Every Emirates ticket comes with fare conditions, and they decide three things: whether the ticket can be refunded, whether a cancellation charge applies, and whether changes cost extra. Emirates says plainly that some tickets are not refundable and others carry cancellation charges. A more flexible fare costs more up front but gives you more back if your plans change.

You can see the conditions before you pay by opening the fare conditions link during booking, and afterwards in Manage your booking on emirates.com or in the Emirates app. If you booked through a travel agent, the agent can show you the rules for your ticket.

Emirates' fees have changed several times and some routes carry temporary waivers, so this page does not quote fee amounts. Treat your own booking as the only reliable figure.

Cancelling a ticket you bought yourself

If the fare allows a refund, you can cancel online through Manage your booking. Emirates refunds to the card you used to buy the ticket; refunds for online purchases cannot go to a different card.

A few details are easy to miss:

  • Partly used tickets. Some tickets become non-refundable once you have flown the first leg. Where a partial refund is allowed, it may be small, because the airline recalculates the fare for the flights you actually took. Emirates suggests considering a change instead of a refund in that case.
  • Unused taxes. Even when the fare itself is not refundable, some airport and government taxes may be. If a change through Manage your booking leaves you owed money, for example unused taxes, Emirates issues a credit note (an EMD) by email. It is valid for one year and can be used on a future Emirates booking or refunded.
  • Extras. Paid seats, prepaid baggage, lounge access and similar services are refunded under their own terms, not the ticket's.

Trips to or from the United States: the 24-hour window

US Department of Transportation rules require airlines to let you either hold a reservation or cancel it without penalty for 24 hours, when you book at least a week ahead. Emirates applies the cancellation version on itineraries that include a US flight. According to its US Customer Service Plan, you can cancel a ticketed booking and get a full refund within 24 hours if the booking was made more than seven days before the first flight departs. The 24 hours run from when you made the booking, not from when the ticket was issued.

You request this through the refund form linked from Manage your booking.

When Emirates cancels or changes your flight

If Emirates disrupts your flight, it says it will try to rebook you on the first available connection and will notify you by email and text message using the contact details in your booking. If the new timing does not suit you, you can ask for other options; what is available depends on your cabin and seat availability.

Which legal rules apply depends on the route:

RouteWhat applies
To or from the USUS DOT refund rules. If Emirates cancels, or significantly changes your itinerary, and you do not accept the alternative, you are entitled to a refund to your original form of payment, including fees for optional services.
Departing an EU airportEU Regulation 261/2004: choice of refund or rerouting, care while you wait, and compensation in some cases.
Departing a UK airportThe UK version of the same rules (often called UK261), enforced by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Under the US rule, a "significant change" includes a departure or arrival time moved by three hours or more on a domestic itinerary or six hours or more on an international one, a change of airport, extra connections, or a downgrade. Emirates' US plan commits to sending refund requests to your card issuer within seven business days, and to refunding other payment types within 20 calendar days.

For EU and UK departures, compensation for a cancellation is only due if you were told less than 14 days before departure and the cause was within the airline's control. Bad weather or air traffic control restrictions usually are not.

Note that Emirates is not an EU or UK airline, so a flight from Dubai into Europe is not covered by EU261 or UK261. Only the departures from Europe or the UK are.

How to request a refund

  1. Open Manage your booking on emirates.com or the Emirates app and check what the fare allows.
  2. If the online cancellation option is not shown, use the official Emirates refund request form.
  3. If you only want a refund for an extra service you did not receive, submit it after your trip and enter only the EMD receipt number for that service. Emirates warns that entering your e-ticket number will cancel the whole itinerary.
  4. If a travel agent issued your ticket, ask the agent. Emirates refunds agent-issued tickets through the agent, not directly.

Requesting a refund cancels the entire booking and cannot be reversed, so be sure before you submit.

Watch out for fake helplines

Search results for "Emirates cancellation" are a favourite target for fake call centres that pose as the airline and charge "service fees". Emirates does not need a third party to cancel your ticket. Use only emirates.com, the Emirates app, or contact details listed on those. This website is independent and cannot cancel, change or refund bookings.

Bottom line

Your fare conditions decide most of what you get back when you cancel, so read them first. If Emirates cancels or significantly changes your flight, you usually have a right to a refund instead of the rebooking, especially on US routes and on departures from Europe and the UK. Make the request through Manage your booking or the official refund form, or through your travel agent if they sold you the ticket.
