Lufthansa Check-In Times: 30 Hours Online, Airport Deadlines

When does Lufthansa check-in open?

Lufthansa check-in opens 30 hours before departure, online and in the app. In Lufthansa's words: "You can check in here from 30 hours before departure, choose your seat and print out your online boarding pass or have it sent to your mobile phone."

The 30 hours count from each flight's own departure. A return flight days later is checked in separately, once it is inside its own 30-hour window.

Automated check-in is switched on for Travel ID profile users and Miles & More members on Schengen flights. Everyone else can register through the link in the booking confirmation, and the service then covers only that booking. Lufthansa adds that automated check-in "cannot be used for flights which do not take place completely in the Schengen Area".

Late-night check-in has limits. For flights to the USA every passenger must be there in person (except on connections where a US airline operates the transatlantic flight), it is not offered for flights leaving North America, and Lufthansa says it is "not available for flights with Air Canada from Munich and Frankfurt". Lufthansa does not list the airports on the page itself; use its "find out whether your departure airport offers evening check-in" link on the late-night check-in page before you rely on it.

Checking in online, step by step

1. Find your booking. Enter your name and the 6-digit booking reference or ticket number. Booked through a travel agency? Enter the airline booking reference if your confirmation shows one (ask the agency if not), or use Lufthansa's separate entry point for "booking details received from your travel agency or tour operator".
2. Sign in with Travel ID. In October 2026 Lufthansa's flow asks you to sign in with a Travel ID, or create one, before you can continue.
3. Add travel details and documents. Lufthansa asks for the travel information and travel documents required for your flight and destination.
4. Choose seats and extras. Pick seats for everyone on the booking and add bags or upgrades if you want them.
5. Save the boarding pass. Keep it in the Lufthansa app, iOS Wallet or Google Pay, or print it.

Online check-in not working, or not possible?

Check these first:

• Wrong reference: an agency reference typed into the main form. Use the airline reference or the travel-agency entry point (step 1).
• Another airline operates the flight: Lufthansa online check-in does not cover codeshares "operated by another airline". Check in with that airline (table below).
• Too early: check-in opens 30 hours before departure, 24 on SWISS and Brussels Airlines.
• No mobile boarding pass for your destination: official regulations can block it. You get only a check-in confirmation and collect the boarding pass at the airport counter.
• A child flying alone with the care service: the Lufthansa check-in counter is "the first point of contact" at the airport (Frankfurt: Hall B, counters 336–339; Munich: counter 417, Level 4).
• A dog or cat in the cabin: you hand "two printouts of the completed and signed form" in at the check-in counter.
• Assistance needs: tell staff when you check in. Lufthansa recommends booking assistance at least 48 hours before departure, though it also accepts requests on the day of travel.

If online check-in still fails, check in at a Lufthansa counter, or at a check-in machine in Frankfurt or Munich, before your airport's deadline.

Which Lufthansa Group airline checks you in, and when?

The operating airline sets the check-in times, not the flight number on your ticket. SWISS says: "The check-in times for codeshare flights are fixed by the operating airlines." Lufthansa check-in works for flights operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and SWISS, but not for codeshare flights "which are operated by another airline, but booked on a Lufthansa flight number". So check the "operated by" line in your booking confirmation first.

What is the Lufthansa airport check-in deadline?

The deadline is set per airport and, for most airports, published only in Lufthansa's lookup tool. Article 6.1 of the Conditions of Carriage says: "Check-in deadlines vary from airport to airport." It then sets a fallback: "Unless otherwise stated, passengers must check in no later than 45 minutes before the scheduled flight departure time."

Checking in online does not move the deadline. Lufthansa's deadline page says that before the cut-off "you must be in possession of your boarding pass, even if you have already checked-in online or via your mobile or been checked in automatically, and you must have checked in your baggage." We could not read Frankfurt or Munich deadlines from a current Lufthansa source. The lookup loads its results by script, and our tools could not query it, so we give no numbers rather than guess.

At both hubs you scan your boarding pass at a bag tag machine, tag the bag and drop it. Frankfurt: Terminal 1, Departure Halls A and B, Zones 12 and 13, open 05:00 to 21:00; Economy and Premium Economy passengers to the USA have passport and boarding pass checked first and drop bags only in Zone 13. Munich: Terminal 2, Departures Level 04.

Running late? Do this now

1. Check your cut-off. Open the deadline lookup or your boarding pass and compare the time with your arrival at the airport, including the security queue.
2. Change the flight before it leaves. If you will miss the deadline, rebook in the Lufthansa app or under My bookings on lufthansa.com if your fare allows it, or reach Lufthansa through its help and contact page.
3. Do not just skip a flight. If you plan to start your trip from a later flight in the booking, tell Lufthansa first; on fares with a fixed ticket sequence, a skipped segment means a recalculated price (next section).

What happens if you miss check-in or the gate?

Lufthansa can cancel your booking, and the rest of your ticket may cost more. Under Article 6.1 of its Conditions of Carriage, Lufthansa reserves "the right to cancel your reservation if you do not comply with the check-in deadlines." Article 6.3 gives the same right "if you fail to arrive at the boarding gate in time", and Article 6.2 says you must be at the gate by the time Lufthansa gives you at check-in.

Missing one flight can change the price of the rest. Article 3.3.3 covers fares that require a fixed ticket sequence: if you do not fly all legs in order, Lufthansa "will recalculate the fare according to your amended routing". The new fare "may be higher or lower than the fare you originally paid." The US edition of the Conditions (August 2026) words it as collecting a fare difference only when the altered routing would have cost more.

There is an exception for some passengers. For people living in Germany, or whose booking starts or ends in Germany, Article 3.3.4 waives the recalculation if force majeure, illness or another reason that arose after booking kept you from flying in sequence. You must tell Lufthansa straight away and prove it; Lufthansa points to its modified coupon sequence form for this. Article 3.3.5 has its own, broader exception for residents of Austria.

Your EU rights depend on checking in on time

On flights covered by EU Regulation 261/2004, delay and denied-boarding protection applies only if you checked in on time. Article 3(2)(a) requires passengers to "present themselves for check-in, as stipulated and at the time indicated in advance and in writing (including by electronic means) by the air carrier", or, "if no time is indicated, not later than 45 minutes before the published departure time." That means the deadline Lufthansa gives you in writing, not the 45-minute fallback, is the one that counts. The condition does not apply when the flight is cancelled.

Does check-in cost anything, and which rules apply now?

Lufthansa lists no fee for checking in. None of the Lufthansa Group check-in pages we read on 31 October 2026 lists a fee for online, automated, late-night or airport check-in, and Air Dolomiti says you can finish check-in at its airport counters "with no extra charges". Paid extras such as seats, bags or upgrades are separate.

• Current flow (October 2026): Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines ask for a Travel ID sign-in as step 2 of online check-in.
• Current Conditions of Carriage: the general edition is dated February 2026 and the US edition August 2026. Both set a 45-minute default (Art. 6.1).

Common questions about Lufthansa check-in

Is a flight check-in 24 hours before boarding or departure?

Departure. Lufthansa counts both the 30-hour opening and the 45-minute default deadline from the scheduled departure time of your flight, not from boarding. Boarding starts earlier, and Lufthansa gives you a gate time at check-in.

Can I check in 24 hours before a Lufthansa flight?

Yes. Lufthansa opens online and app check-in 30 hours before departure, so at 24 hours you are already inside the window. Twenty-four hours is when SWISS and Brussels Airlines open check-in, and Austrian Airlines issues boarding passes for trips touching a US airport only from 24 hours before departure.

What is the Lufthansa 45-minute rule?

It is the fallback check-in deadline in Lufthansa's Conditions of Carriage: unless Lufthansa states otherwise, you must be checked in 45 minutes before scheduled departure. EU261 uses the same 45 minutes when an airline gives no time in writing. Airports can set an earlier cut-off (Brussels Airlines closes long-haul Economy check-in at Brussels 70 minutes before departure), and some are later (Brussels Airlines Business short-haul at Brussels: 40 minutes), so do not rely on 45 minutes; check your airport's time. How early should I arrive for an international flight with Lufthansa?

The Lufthansa pages we read give no arrival time. Its sister airlines SWISS and Brussels Airlines recommend 2 hours before short-haul and 3 hours before long-haul departures. Two hours is therefore tight for a long-haul flight, especially with bags.

Do I have to check in online with Lufthansa?

No. You can check in at a Lufthansa check-in counter, and at Frankfurt and Munich you can issue your boarding pass at a check-in machine. None of the Lufthansa pages we read lists a fee for airport check-in. Either way, your boarding pass and checked bags must be sorted before your airport's deadline.

Is it better to check in online or at the airport?

Online, when you can. With a mobile boarding pass and no checked bags you can go straight to security, and with bags you use the bag drop instead of the full counter process.
